INDIVIDUAL EXTENSION TO THE VESTMANN ISLANDS BEFORE A TREK
Before a journey or a trek in the south of Iceland, and join your fellow travelers, you can discover the magnificent Westman Islands archipelago. We will give you all the necessary information as well as the vouchers before your arrival in Iceland.
This extension can be carried out daily from mid-May to the end of August, except during the following local festivals: (see in Information)

- an extension of 3 days / 2 nights in the islands
- an extension of 4 days / 3 nights in the islands (ask for prices)
The first day of the post-tour extension begins in the afternoon or evening of the last day of the trek

Festivals are held all over the country, but this one is by far the largest of them all with between 11,000 and 16,000 people, mostly wild young Vikings (nearly 4 times the population of the island) attending each year.
The dates displayed below can connect with most of our trekings. But of course, you can ask us for other operation dates that would suit you from May to September.
The return date of this extension must correspond to the one when your trekking with Fjallabak begins

Day 1: Transfer by regular bus from Reykjavik bus central station to the islands ferry. Departure from Reykjavik early in the morning (8am) or in the afternoon (5pm) to reach in 2h30. Landeyjarhöfn wharf is situated at the foot of volcano Eyjafjallajökull. It takes 40 minutes for the ferry Herjolfur to reach Heimaey, the largest and only inhabited island dominated by Eldfell, « the mountain of fire », a new volcano whose 1973 eruption increased the island’s area by one third and threatened the important fishing harbour.
Day 2 (or days 2 and 3): The Westman Islands are home to the largest established colony of Puffins in the world, with about 8 millions of birds (observation until August 20th). It is often possible to admire the great Gannet diving for fish, and if you are lucky, you will catch a glimpse of Killer whales or huge Fin whales.
Day 3 (or day 4): Early departure by ferry to the mainland. at 8:15 a.m. The regular bus to Reykjavik leave at 10:35 a.m. and drops you off 45 minutes later 11:20 a.m. in the village of Hella in front of our base-warehouse where your guide and your travel companions welcome you. Start of the trek
Hike through the lava fields that destroyed in 1973 an old part of the city and then climb the new Eldfell volcano. Breathtaking views of the entire archipelago, the vast ocean to the south and, to the north, the volcanoes and glaciers of the South Coast.
Visit the interesting natural history museum in the city center, but especially the Eldheimar museum (volcanism museum) located at the foot of Eldfell and which will allow you to relive the eruption of 1973.

Hike from city center to Elephant's Rock through Herjolfsdalur Valley (golf course) Then along the cliffs to reach the lighthouse on the promontory of Storhöfði which offers a breathtaking view of the archipelago. From June to August 15th (+/-) you can admire and photograph Atlantic puffins which occupy the grassy summit part of the cliffs by the thousands
Boat or zodiac trip A small cruise of approximately 1,5 hour on board MS Viking at 11:00 AM or 03:30 PM from the pear at Heimaey harbour.
The boat tour gives you a look at colorful ocean caves and other islands of Westman Islands, and the lava coastline the bird colonies of the dizzying cliffs. You can observe variety of seabird and and if you are lucky a family of Killer whales. The trip ends by sailing into the Cliff Cave near the harbour, where you will hear the sound of unique acoustic.

Please note: City bus or taxi from your hotel to Mjódd (Reykjavik central bus station) is at your own expense.
Return from the islands to the mainland
- Departure from Heimaey ferry at 8:30 to arrive at Landeyjarhöfn around 09:10
- Departure from Landeyjarhöfn (Stræto) bus at 09:25 to arrive at 10:21 in the village of Hella where the base camp of Fjallabak is located and where your traveling companions are waiting for you.
