Day 1: At the end of a Fjallabak trek in the Southern Highlands, instead of returning to Reykjavík with your travel companions, you leave them en route to the village of Hella where the Fjallabak base is located. From Hella, a regular bus reaches in less than an hour, the port of Landeyjahöfn, at the foot of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, just opposite the archipelago. Your guide will give you information as well as vouchers before you leave for the islands.
The crossing takes only 40 minutes. The ferry is passing between the two beautiful tabular islands of Elliðaey and Bjarnarey to reach the port of Heimaey. (If return from some distant treks do not permit to take the last evening ferry, your guide will drop you off at an hotel in a small village of the south coast opposite the islands and the next morning a bus will take you to the pier).
Day 2 (or 2 and 3) : Heimaey, the largest and only inhabited island of the archipelago, is dominated by Eldfell, « the mountain of fire », a new volcano whose eruption increased the island’s area by one third and threatened the important fishing harbour in 1973. Take an evening walk on the volcano, still warm! The Islands are home to the largest established colony of Puffins in the world, with about 8 millions of birds (observation until August 15th). It is often possible to admire the great Gannet diving for fish, and if you are lucky, you will catch a glimpse of Killer whales or huge Fin whales. Little cruise around the island of Heimaey depending on weather conditions.
Day 3 (or day 4): Embarkation on the ferry Herjólfur to regain the mainland at Landeyjarhöfn. You have the flexibility to choose between two ferry schedules to the mainland, connected to two bus schedules that take you back to Reykjavik Central Bus Station
Hike through the lava fields that destroyed in 1973 an old part of the city and then climb the new Eldfell volcano. Breathtaking views of the entire archipelago, the vast ocean to the south and, to the north, the volcanoes and glaciers of the South Coast.
Visit the interesting natural history museum in the city center, but especially the Eldheimar museum (volcanism museum) located at the foot of Eldfell and which will allow you to relive the eruption of 1973.
The port and the fort of Skansinn with the Scandinavian tarred wooden church
Hike from city center to Elephant's Rock through Herjolfsdalur Valley (golf course) Then along the cliffs to reach the lighthouse on the promontory of Storhöfði which offers a breathtaking view of the archipelago. From June to August 15th (+/-) you can admire and photograph Atlantic puffins which occupy the grassy summit part of the cliffs by the thousands
Boat or zodiac trip A small cruise of approximately 1,5 hour on board MS Viking at 11:00 AM or 03:30 PM from the pear at Heimaey harbour.
The boat tour gives you a look at colorful ocean caves and other islands of Westman Islands, and the lava coastline the bird colonies of the dizzying cliffs. You can observe variety of seabird and and if you are lucky a family of Killer whales. The trip ends by sailing into the Cliff Cave near the harbour, where you will hear the sound of unique acoustic.
