Self-drive in Autumn

In September and October, the first northern lights illuminate the first dark nights. The first frosty nights install the mirrors of the morning hard rime. Rolling hilltops capped with icing sugar chase the sheep down to the valley below where the horsemen gather them. The light is incredible, and the “fires” of autumn set ablaze the arctic vegetation: green dark pines, arctic birches, spruces, woolly willows and rowans are competing. Fat redwings and other passerines are stuffing themselves with berries. On the tundra, gathering wild geese are rehearsing before the great flight South over the ocean. Before this world disappears in the storms of the arctic night, the ephemeral beauty of this season leaves a profound mark on the general pace of life, kindling our nostalgia and vibrant desire of harmony.

The circular route N°1

The routes described here in this program take place around the country, mainly on the circular route N°1 which is kept open all year round. In autumn this fully paved road is passable by both tourist vehicles and jeeps.

The 4x4 tracks of the interior

The tracks of the interior which are still passable require a 4x4 Jeep. But be careful, they are less and less frequented and a good autumn snowstorm can make them impassable on certain sections for a few days or permanently. It is therefore necessary to follow the weather forecasts, to have your phone charged and rechargeable, to discuss your route for the next day with your hosts or with the wardens of refuges or the rangers of the national parks.

Note that: in the Highlands there are no other accommodation options than in refuges or camping. Of course it is possible to make incursions into the interior from hotels located on the outskirts.

Overnight stays in Reykjavik

On arrival and at the end of the trip are not included here, nor airport transfers on arrival and departure. But we can include them, as it is also possible to pickup the vehicle on arrival at Keflavik International Airport and to return it at the end of the trip to Reykjavik or at Keflavik airport.

Domestic flight

The domestic flight (if any) is at your expense if you decide to return to Reykjavik by domestic flight or if you decide to start your journey on your own from the north or east of Iceland. You can book a domestic flight online or through us

The itinerary presented for this trip is only an example that can be done during this period. It is indicative and inspiring for your independent tour. You can do it as described in whole or in part or be inspired by it. We will establish your itinerary together before creating a first quote.
